THE GRID

This series represents a contrast between the initial drawing process – restricted only by the 90 degree angles of a grid – as opposed to the following and more logical problems having to do with such elements as color, scale, and balance. It can be a wonderful challenge to both sides of the brain. When successful, there can be an almost harmonic quality.

BUILDINGS

This is a body of work that employs the same rather free initial drawing stage in an even less restricted way in that any angle can be used and the divisions or lines do not have to intersect as they would in a grid. The outcome is a kind of construction or ‘building’ of the composition. Often, there is an architectural aspect to this.

OPTICS

It is almost impossible (for me, at least) to follow the evolution of the ‘Building’ series without an exploration of the implied third dimension. It is a result that, at times, becomes inevitable. It is also a kind of visual experience that lends itself well to the paper cut-out technique in that there really is no actual line except in the initial conceptual stage. Instead the forms in the completed work - find their definition through contrast – primarily by color.

CONSTRUCTIVE CONCEPTS

In most of my other work, the cut-out can either stand on it’s own or serve as a study for a canvas of greater size. In this series, the cut-out is used strictly as a maquette – in a way that would be much like an architect’s model - for a project considerably larger in scale. ‘Constructive Concepts’ refers to proposed works - often using multiple panels – that can be appropriate for a particular exhibition space.
